Exmouth United Under-15s overcame selection woes owing to injury to book a place in the next round of the KO Cup with a 3-1 win over Twyford Spartans.
United opted to play down hill in the first half and straight from the off applied pressure with a blistering run down the left by winger Harry Ottaway only to find his cross too strong and a golden opportunity was lost. United continued to have all the play in the visitors half and were awarded a corner kick when again Ottaway, curling in his trade mark corner kick found the right boot of Joe Paver who calmly slotted it into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. United didn’t have it all their own way as a sole break from the Spartans striker had Ed Hurley pulling off a diving save to keep the score line still in favour to United. It was again Hurley who set up United’s second goal with a long goal kick which cleared the defenders and it was new signing Ryan Schaufler who broke through and very calmly beat the advancing goalie and slotted the ball in for a well deserved sole goal to see United into the break two goals to the good.
In the second half United knew they had to tighten up and keep as much prosecution as possible but a slip in mid field allowed the visitors to break and shoot on goal and again Hurley saved United with a finger tip save over the bar. The game continued with end to end football and it was a break again up the wing this time from Harry Williamson and a cross lead to a corner kick for United. Again a circling Ottaway cross was cleared by the Spartans keeper only to fall to the knee of Paver who popped it up and placed a volley into the top right corner of the visitors goal for a 3-0 lead to United. United conceded a late goal by the visitors but held onto a well deserved 3-1 win to progress into the next round of the league cup. A great team performance and some outstanding saves made by Ed Hurley now see the boys return to league action this weekend with an away trip to Stoke Hill in Exeter for what will be a tough match.
