ROYAL Marines AFC showed, over the course of 48 hours, just why they have earned themselves the tag of the Peninsula League Easter Division's most inconsistent side tag.A 6-1 drubbing of University of Exeter on Saturday at Endurance Park was followed by a 5-1 defeat against the same opposition - all be it on their own Topsham Road ground, on Monday evening. The Saturday success owed much to the predatory skills of striker Ben Shepherd, who notched another hat-trick to take his season's tally to 29 - making him joint top scorer in the chase for the vaunted golden boot!Richie Hope and Shay Saunders also found the back of the Students net and, post match, all the talk at Endurance Park was of a possible 5th placed finish.Sadly, those dreams were blown away on Monday evening with the 5-1 defeat at the hands of the Students. There is one more mission for the Marines to complete this first season in the Peninsula League and there is much riding on the outcome. They play Axminster Town at Endurance Park on Tuesday, May 5, and who ever wins the contest will finish as the highest placed of all five of the East Devon clubs competing in the Eastern Division this season. An unlikely seven goals for the side will see them reach 100 for the season.
