Brixington United Under-14s emerged as 2-1 victors from their derby meeting with Budleigh Salterton in an Exeter Youth League clash.

Budleigh made a bright start and created the first chance of the game when a snap shot from inside the area brought a smart save from Alex Trevena.

At the other end Matt Smith saw his powerful drive well smothered by the Budleigh keeper.

Bailey Gray then just failed to get onto the end of a Smith cross and a Sam Skinner shot curled just high and wide as United cranked up the pressure on the Budleigh goal.

Smith then struck the bar and a Ryan Tullett shot was blocked as United fought to take the initiative. But it was Budleigh who broke the deadlock just before half time.

Alex Trevena made a smart double save from a Budleigh shot but as the ball broke free it was crossed into the goalmouth where Joe Walker reacted first to head home.

The early part of the second half saw Budleigh deal comfortably with any United threat. United were not playing their normal flowing football, often conceding possession with long balls forward when simple passes to team mates were on.

But just when it looked like United were losing their way, Smith scored an excellent equaliser.

Chasing a long through ball he held off the close attention of the Budleigh defender to slot his shot across the advancing keeper and into the far corner of the net.

United tails were now up and shortly after they scored what proved to be the winner.

The ball ran through to the far post where Jason Mann beat the Budleigh keeper to loft the ball towards goal. As the ball dropped below the crossbar the Budleigh defender desperately tried to clear but could only head the ball into the net.

Budleigh tried frantically for an equaliser, but United defenders Luke, Bland, Josh Phillips, Jamie Waller, Ryan Shaw, Liam Deeprose and Lewis Miller held firm and United held on to secure another three points.

But well played to Budleigh who pushed United all the way in this keenly contested derby match.
