Lympstone got their season off to a start with a tough Bill Slee cup tie against an Uplowman team that finished 5th in Div 2 last season.

George Webster had done a fantastic job with the Cliff Field ground and the pitch was looking great.

It was very apparent that the Lympstone players looked nervous and a bit rusty, and were punished for this with an early goal for Uplowman, a good move down the left was met by a good finish by the striker for 1-0, within 10 mins a similar move from Lympstone on the right and a good cross by Chris Hooker was met by a flying Mark Dunne and he finished at the far post. 1-1 and both teams were pushing for the 2nd when an error in the Lympstone box was tapped home by an Uplowman player for 2-1 and not long after the half time whistle. A few words of encouragement were needed by the Lympets Gaffer and he needed to get them back to playing the flowing football they are known for, very soon in the 2nd half it was clear a different team had come out and a long ball sent forward was met by Jamie Alford who chipped the keeper from the edge of the box 2-2.

Uplowman pushed hard for the winner but came up against Jordan Hockhold the Lympstone keeper returning from a bad injury sustained in a Pre-Season match in great form , but unfortunately not even some great saves from him could make up for another error in the box finished well by Uplowman for a 3-2 lead. With only 13 mins to go the Lympets pushed forward for an equaliser and after a long throw from Alford finally fell to Canning in the box he poked it home for 3-3 (WHAT A GAME !!!!!!!!! ) The final whistle came and it was going to take 30 mins of extra time to separate these two teams.

Both teams tried in vain to get the next goal but then what seemed a perfectly good challenge from Steve Hardisty was greeted with an award of a Penalty and that was finished well by the Uplowman player 4-3 and half time. The 2nd half saw Lympstone camped in the Uplowman box but just couldn’t find the finish, then with 8 to go a time for a change with Dan Bowden making way for John Greenslade who made his way up top, 1 min to go and a ball sent through was flicked on by Tim Mills and Greenslade ran onto it and slotted it home YES!!!!!!!!! I know the new no1 the golden child had scored the crowd were going mental cries of JACKO- JACKO rang round the cliff field but 4-4 it was and the final whistle blew.

The lottery of Penalties it was and with Mills,Dunne,Hooker and Greenslade all matching the Uplowman strikes until a poor strike against the post by an Uplowman player opened the door for Lympstone and it was down to Captain Ben Canning to Finish things off. A great strike was met by a good save and the game was still on , Uplowman scored the next pen and Chris Eynon walk up to the spot Knowing he had to score, Another good strike but a great save by the Uplowman keeper and Lympstone were out, A great game and a fantastic spectacle for all well done to both sides and the very best of luck to Uplowman in the next round. A fantastic M.O.M performance from Jordan Hockhold in the Lympstone goal well done and we now move on to Upottery next week.
