Lympstone Reserves left it mighty late to ensure that they remain the only unbeaten side in Division Eight of the Devon and Exeter League as they drew 1-1 with Cheriton Fitzpaine thanks to a goal in the sixth minute of added time at the end of the game.
Fresh from their win over league leaders last week, Lympstone 2nd’s were expecting a comfortable 3 points when they welcomed Cheriton Fitzpaine to the Cliff Field.
With key players called up for the fiirst team, Lympstone started nervously but soon took control with man of the match Harry Mills dominating midfileld with some strong challenges.
All looked to be going to plan with Lympstone’s No. 9 Mark Dobrijevic and Dave Whipp on the left both coming close, but Cheriton’s keeper had other ideas and pulled off some outstanding saves. And it was Cheriton’s keeper again which stopped Andy Lowe from opening the scoring with a spectacular close range double save.
With Lympstone camped in Cheriton’s half the home keeper Jordan Hockold was struggling to keep warm on his debut match. However when Cheriton’s forward did threaten to upset the form book he soon sprang in to action to make a fine save to keep Lympstone level.
Despite several opportunities to take the lead Lympstone failed to take advantage of their superiority and Cheriton held out until the half time break.
The second half started the same with Lympstone’s Peter Smith creating several chances from midfield but it was the visitors who opened the scoring with a rare attack that saw the ball come out to the edge of the Lympstone area for a fine volley in to the corner.
With their unbeaten record threatened Lympstone stepped up a gear with Connor Fellows and Darren Caplin both coming on to add to the attack, but Cheriton held firm with some solid defending and 3 goal line clearances. It looked all set for a major upset but Lympstone never gave up and 6 minutes in to injury time Jamie Alfords long throw in to the box was bundled in to the net by Mark Dobrijevic to get the equalisier and the precious point to put Lympstone top of the table and remain the only team unbeaten in Division 8.
