EXMOUTH Town Ladies travelled to Old Suttonians in Plymouth looking to avenge their recent defeat by the league leaders in the League Cup.

Both side were quickly out of the traps and it required a fine save from Town keeper Dani Bessell to deny the hosts an early lead.

The opening goal came after 14 minutes when Town striker Leanne Hunt outpaced the defence before coolly slotting home.

The home team were on level terms after 35 minutes when their striker lifted the ball over Bessell after racing clear and this saw the two sides into the break on level terms.

The half-time score did flatter the home team somewhat for Town, with Nic Smallacombe and Jen Cordwell a constant threat on the wings and Abby Yukon, Kat Parsley and Anita James dominating the midfield, were the better side.

The home side took charge after the break but Town defenders Carlie Lowe and Vicki Marsden ably supported by Amy Vinnicombe and Louise Jones, kept the home attackers at arms length.

It was clear that the third goal of the game would be decisive.

With 20 minutes remaining, Town skipper Nic Smallacombe struck a wonderful shot from 20 yards that flew into the net and any thoughts of a reply from the hosts was ended when, shortly afterwards, Claire Bedwell combined with the lethal Hunt who slid the ball under the advancing keeper to seal a 3-1 win.

Keeper Dani Bessell was in fine form to keep out the home side as they tried to force a way back into the game but Exmouth held on.

Manager Jeff Dorman said: "It was a fine effort coupled with great team spirit that got us through against a very competent opposition. All the girls played their part."

Exmouth are away to Bideford this Sunday April 26th.
