Hill heads Robins to third in the table – now for the cup!

Budleigh Salterton are up to third in the South West Peninsula League (SWPL) Eastern Division table after a 3-2 home win over Teignmouth, writes Alan Beer.

Just getting the game on was something of a ‘result’ for the club, for they were the only team across the whole of the SWPL Premier and Eastern Divisions to stage a fixture on what was another soggy Saturday for local football clubs.

The game also carried extra significance as the same two teams meet again at Greenway Lane this coming Saturday (February 10) in a Devon Premier Cup quarter-final tie.

A midweek slitting and rolling of the pitch left the Greenway Lane surface in excellent condition for the game, which saw both teams make good starts.

It was Teignmouth who scored first, netting a fourth minute header from Sean Ayre after the home defence had failed to clear a corner.

However, as early as the goal was, Budleigh had already spurned two glorious opportunities in what was an end-to-end start to the contest.

Budleigh were soon back on the front foot and were a whisker away from levelling when a splendid run and cross from Mike White ended with a Jordan Harris header flying just wide of the mark.

The Robins continued to look the more likely and parity was finally, and deservedly, restored two minutes before the break and what a goal it was!

When the ball fell to the feet of Kyle Bassett some 20 yards out, he took a touch to settle himself before rifling an unstoppable shot that arrowed its way into the top corner of the net.

Twelve minutes into the second half, Aaron Denny weaved his way into the box before unleashing a powerful shot that looked destined for the net, only for Teignmouth glovesman Luke Ashford to keep the ball out – albeit with a little help from his crossbar!

Two minutes later the Robins were again on the front foot and, when White again delivered an inviting cross into the Teigns area, Budleigh player-manager Kevin Hill timed his run to perfection to plant a header past Ashford and give his side the lead for the first time in the contest.

Teignmouth levelled things up in the 66th minute with what was just about only their second ‘attempt’ on the home goal in the match!

Sam Chapman was the scorer, cutting inside before, from the edge of the area, drilling the ball across Alan Doble and into the net.

With 12 minutes remaining, the lively Denny was upended in the area, but Danny Williams – a second half substitute – saw his spot kick saved by Ashford, though the Teigns glovesman did appear to move forward well before the kick was taken prior to saving low down to his left side.

The ‘miss’ did not hurt the Robins though for, with five minutes to play, Liam Ellis floated a free-kick to the far post where Hill had once again arrived right on cue to head the ball home and win his side all three points.

This Saturday (February 10) it’s quarter-final day in the Devon Premier Cup with Budleigh once again entertaining Teignmouth. Kick-off is expected to be 3pm, but if you are going to the match keep an eye on the Budleigh website at www.budleighsaltertonafc.co.uk
