Newtown 1, Budleigh Salterton Reserves 3

The Robins Reserves worked their collective socks off for a victory at Broadclyst against Newtown, writes SpursTom.

Striker Richard Higham rightly gets the acclaim for a superb hat-trick, but this was no one-man show for the whole, team contributed.

On 17 minutes Higham opened the scoring after which only a brilliant save by the Newtown glovesman stopped the lead being doubled.

A home corner was not cleared and the equaliser was prodded home three minutes before the break.

Why, oh why, oh why have Budleigh not shown such commitment and work rate before, as they did in the second period!

Good work by Callum Shipton paved the way for Higham’s second and Sam Schlaefli then rattled the home bar with the keeper beaten.

Higham completed his hat-trick before the home keeper made another outstanding save.

Newtown played their part, but the Budleigh’s defence were doing a massive job whenever danger threatened, safeguarding their goal anyway they could for a 3–1 victory to savour on the way back to Greenway Lane.

Robins team: A Richardson, C Wilson, K Riddell, J Greenslade, J Hill, Z Pearce, J Sale, R Higham, S Schlaefli, C Shipton, B Gloyn. Subs: M Pidgeon, A Martin, S Richards (all played) and J Hockold (not used).
