Brixington Blues Under-13s made a superb start to the new Exeter and District Youth League season with a 2-1 home win over what looked a good Ottery St Mary side.
With the Blues now playing 11-a-side and on a full size pitch with big goals for the first time, the players might have been excused for taking a while to find their rhythm.
Indeed, they did fall behind, conceding in the 10th minute with the unfortunate Luke Ewing getting the final touch to concede an own goal, but the response was excellent.
Tom Dean combined well with Ethan Hawes and, when Hawes cut the ball back towards the penalty spot, young Ewing arrived bang on cue to drill the ball home – meaning he had scored at both ends within a couple of minutes!
Ottery were awarded what seemed a ‘harsh’ penalty decision, but Blues glovesman Ben Jeffrey made a fine save.
Just before the break Blues took a 2-1 lead with a sweet passing move that began with the ball in the left back slot!
Ewing picked up the ball in midfield from Fin MacDonald and played a through ball for Hawes, who settled himself before firing past the goalkeeper to see Blues into a 2-1 half-time lead.
The second half played out goalless despite some dangerous attacks from Ottery. Blues’ defence was up to the challenge, aided by Finn Clifford, in his debut for Blues, matching the pace of the Ottery winger, and Blues held on to close out a fabulous 2-1 victory.
Ben Jeffery bagged the Blues’ Man of the Match award for his excellent display in goal.
