Exmouth Town struck a nap hand haul of Boxing Day goals as they defeated hosts Budleigh Salterton in the festive derby at Greenway Lane.

Town boss Jody Bolt gave an honest assessment when he said: “At half-time we were not two goals better than them but we were two goals ahead and the second one arriving as it did, on the stroke of half-time, set us up for the second half which we did take charge of.”

The opening goal came from a Kyle Bassett corner that Mark Simic met with a powerful header.

The first-half was a very even contest with both defences proving their worth as the two sets of attackers looked to get onto the front foot.

The crucial second goal of the game arrived just as the referee was readying to send the sides in for a well deserved break. The lively Bassett picked the ball up, advanced a dozen yards, and then un-leashed a superb right footed shot that flew into the net.

That second strike certainly aided the Bolt half-time talk, something he alluded to saying: “Had we gone in at one up it would have been about right based on the balance of play, but Kyle’s strike – and he’s hit a few of those this term – changed the perspective of the match and left me simply prompting the lads to keep it tight at the back, and, if the opportunity arose, kill them (Budleigh) off with a third.”

That third goal arrived from another corner as once again Simic was in the right place at the right time to thump the loose ball home.

Bassett then sealed another excellent individual contribution with the fourth, this time using his left foot to nail a shot from the edge of the box.

Fittingly, the fifth and final goal was netted by leading scorer this term, Dave O’Connor.

Bolt said: “By the end we were fully deserving of the points. Every player put a shift in for the cause and it made for a great Boxing Day for all concerned with the club.”
