Exmouth Town warm up for Saturday’s big home FA Vase tie with clean-sheet success

PUBLISHED: 09:58 12 October 2018 | UPDATED: 09:59 12 October 2018

Exmouth Town are back in cup action this Saturday when they entertain Elburton Villa in the First Round Proper of the FA Vase, writes John Dibsdall.

Town will be looking to extend their run in this competition that has seen them defeat Callington Town and Bridgwater Town in the qualifying rounds.

The winners of the tie will receive £825 and the losers £275. Extra time will be played, if needed, and if the sides are still level there will be a replay on the following Tuesday (October 16).

Town opened this season’s league campaign at Elburton when they came away with a 4-1 victory, but the Plymouth-based side earned a very creditable victory over Southern League side Bideford in the St Lukes Bowl and they have also recorded home victories over Callington, Torpoint and Argyle but have yet to win on the road.

Last Saturday, Town extended their unbeaten SWPL run to eight games with a comfortable 5-0 victory over Ivybridge.

With both sides taking time to adapt to the windy conditions the opening exchanges were scrappy, but Town gradually took control and their sustained pressure finally told in the 28th minute. Ace High had seen one effort rebound off the post before Aarron Denny returned a half-cleared corner with interest, an eighteen-yard drive nestling in the top corner.

Three minutes later Dave Rowe was manhandled in the penalty box and Nathan Cooper despatched the resulting penalty. Town went into the break three ahead after Scott Merritt’s cross-cum-shot from way out near the touchline sailed over the bemused ‘keeper.

The second half saw Town continue in a similar vein, dominating play, it being a question of how many would the goal tally be?

A couple of gilt-edged chances went begging, but there were further goals from Max Gillard, shooting home through a crowd of players and a trademark header by High from a Denny corner to maintain Town’s excellent home scoring and yet another clean sheet.

Next up for Town is that big FA Vase tie against an Elburton Villa side that last Saturday lost 5-0 at Cullompton Rangers.

Town will be without Jamie Dirrane for the cup tie as he completes a three match suspension following his sending off at Elmore and there are doubts over ‘keeper Robbie Powell.

However, Karl Rickard, unavailable for the Ivybridge game, should return.
