Exmouth Town edged closer to the SWPL East Division title with an emphatic 6-1 victory over the University of Exeter at a wet and windy Southern Road on Wednesday evening, writes John Dibsdall.

espite surface water the referee was happy for the match to go ahead and Town made the perfect start scoring with just thirty eight seconds on the clock. Ben Shephard’s drive hit the post and Lloyd Gardner tapped home the rebound. Gardner than smashed a free kick against the crossbar before the Students equalised after fourteen minutes. Town’s response was immediate and Ben Shephard scored with a well placed drive two minutes later to restore the lead. On thirty five minutes another fine individual run and shot by Gardner gave Town breathing space and they comfortably closed out the half.

With the conditions deteriorating by the minute Town emphasised their superiority within two minutes of the restart, Adam Fowler firing home the fourth. Town’s strength and overall fitness gave them almost total control of the second period and they added further goals from Dan Boere and Matt Dawson.

With Stoke Gabriel winning at Budleigh Salterton Town’s lead at the top is now twelve points although the South Devon side have a game in hand. To be mathematically sure of the title Town need ten more points from their remaining six games.

If they were to win their next three then the ‘tenth’ point would be available to them in the April 24 Southern Road derby meeting with Budleigh Salterton!
