A Matt Dawson hat-trick helped Exmouth Town to a 5-1 victory at St Blazey, writes John Dibsdall.

It was a fifth straight league victory that sees Town climb to sixth in the table.

Whilst on the balance of play, the home side will feel the score line flattered Town, the old adage that ‘goals win games’, was never more appropriate.

Town opened the scoring on 10 minutes with their first attack. Joe Bushin chased down a through-ball and, as the goalkeeper dived at his feet to block the shot, the ball cannoned off to Nathan Antat who showed good composure to avoid a couple of challenges to set up Dawson for a simple tap-in.

Halfway through the first period Dawson had a shot deflected on to a post before Town doubled their lead on 27 minutes. The goal belonged entirely to Antat. Intercepting a pass with excellent control he showed great awareness to hammer the ball home from fully forty yards pass a stranded ‘keeper.

Any thoughts Town were going to coast to a comfortable victory were dispelled a minute later when a twenty yard free kick was dispatched into the top corner with stand-in ‘keeper, Martin Finnerton, helpless. The same goal scorer should have brought the sides level before the break, but he blazed over the top from the penalty spot after Town had been penalised for hand ball.

St Blazey then rattled the crossbar two minutes into the second half, but thereafter Town were in control. Dawson scored his second after Bushin’s shot had been parried, Bushin then turned goalscorer heading home a cross from Antat and Dawson completed the scoring with his hat trick and eighth goal in five matches in added time.

This Saturday, Town travel to Torpoint who last week were knocked out of the FA Vase having reached the second round with victories over Western League opposition. Kick-off should be 3pm although they have experienced problems with their floodlights and the kick-off may be brought forward to 2.15pm.

The reserves will be looking to extend their winning run following the 5-2 victory over Halwill when they entertain local rivals East Budleigh, kick-off 2.15pm.
