Exmouth Town ensured that they’d be a top five South West Peninsula League Premier Division outfit at Christmas with a comfortable 2-0 home victory over Elburton Villa, writes John Dibsdall.

The sides were goalless at half-time thanks to a combination of resolute defending and the failure by Town to convert any one of the numerous chances they created.

The right side combination of Barry McConnell and Jordan Hopkins was particularly strong but hesitancy in front of goal and wayward shooting meant the sides were level at the break.

Everything changed within twenty seconds of the restart!

Danny Clay, who was dominant in midfield throughout the ninety minutes, crossed from the right and picked out James Ansell, who had just come on as a substitute, and his right foot shot deflected past the gloves man off the covering defender.

As Town continued to dominate they also continued to waste chances until, on sixty-three minutes Hopkins set up Matt Dawson who this time made no mistake with a fierce right foot drive giving the ‘keeper no chance.

With the visitors limited to long range efforts Town’s defence were never in difficulties and the home side were content to ease their way to their twelfth victory of the campaign.

Town are at home on Boxing Day morning when Cullompton Rangers are the visitors for an 11am kick-off.

With the weather forecast favourable this should be Town’s first Boxing Day fixture since 2008 when they drew 1-1 with close rivals Budleigh Salterton.
