Exmouth Town are in Tuesday night action (kick-off 7.30pm) when they entertain Plymouth Argyle in the quarter-finals of the St Lukes Bowl, writes John Dibsdall.

The prize, for the winners of the tie, is a last four meeting with either Buckland Athletic or Exeter City, who meet at the same time in South Devon.

Last Saturday, Town retained their unbeaten home record with a 4-2 victory over a determined Camelford side.

Town were slow out of the blocks at the start of each half and twice found themselves a goal down!

Within the first minute, a long throw caused confusion and hesitancy in Town’s defence leaving the attacker in the clear within the six yard box to fire home.

With the visitors putting at times nine men behind the ball Town were patient in their build-up and finally earned their reward in the 32nd minute. After sustained pressure, Camelford failed to clear a corner and Mark Lever volleyed the loose ball home.

Shouts from both sides for hand ball and penalties were turned away and the sides went into the break on level terms.

Within a minute of the restart, Town players were looking at each other as no one went to close down a midfield player driving forward who had all the time in the world to rifle a shot into the bottom corner from 25 yards!

Town’s response was immediate and they were back on level terms within a minute with Callum Shipton turning home a driven cross from Aarron Denny.

From that moment on, providing the defence tightened up, there was only going to be one winner as Town pressed forward. They duly took the lead for the first time in the contest in the 59th minute with a close range header from Lever.

Despite the visiting ‘keeper making two fines saves he found a Denny shot too hot to handle and Nathan Cooper tapped home in the 79th minute to secure a victory that has taken Town up to third in the table.

This Saturday (December 15), Town travel to Torpoint Athletic and will have new signing Jordan Harris in the squad.

Harris made a number of appearances for Town in the 2016/17 season, but after a very successful goal scoring season with Budleigh Salterton, he joined Cullompton Rangers at the start of this campaign.
