Exmouth Amateurs warned up for this coming weekends Devon Senior Cup quarter-final tie with Lapford by putting visiting Alphington to the sword at Warren View.
Having gone down in their previous two outings when they took on the top two sides in Fresha League Division One, Ammies need to restore confidence ahead of that massive fixture with Lapford, and they got just that with a resounding 8-2 success.
Manager Jody Bolt opted to field a changed formation, reverting to a traditional 4-2-4 and it clearly suited the players as they created a number of chances even before taking a 10th minute lead when Daz Carr rifled a free-kick goal wards that was headed past his own keeper by an Alphas player! Carr was also the source of the second goal, with his in-swinging corner finding its way directly into the net, helped by a punch from the visiting gloves man!
On the half hour the irrepressible Carr delivered a cross from the right that was headed home by Matt Cousins, but, with half-time approaching, the Exeter side got one back.
Danny Hall and Marco Volpini were introduced at the break and both made their mark in the second period.
Hall lobbed the Alphas goalkeeper to make it 4-1 and Volpini thumped home a left volley before the pair combined for Hall to provide the assists and Volpini the finish to make it 6-1.
Alphington netted next, but Ammies were quickly back onto the front foot and Cousins took centre stage in the last ten minutes scoring first with his right foot and then with his left to complete a fine hat-trick. On Saturday Ammies travel to Lapford for the big cup tie. The hosts will be confident, but Ammies can travel with equal confidence as they seek to become only the third side from Exmouth to lift the Devon Senior Cup in the competitions’ 125-year history!
