Exiles 3, Bank United 2

This Exmouth derby in the Exeter and District Sunday League was touted pre-match as the prequel to the Jim Howard Cup

Final being played on April 30 at Southern Road, Exmouth.

Based on the evidence of this encounter that final is one not too miss!

A win for either team would put them in contention for a chance of winning the

league as they started the match sitting in second and third places respectively with four games to play and both still to meet the team currently sitting top of the table.

Bank United started the stronger and they took a 15th minute lead through Jamie Drummond.

Exiles responded well and when Kevin Pitt unselfishly put a neat ball across the six yard line, Ian Boyd thumped it home to level things up at 1-1.

In the 25th minute Gareth Davies made a surging run through the Bank defence only to be

brought down.

Up stepped the ‘Cheeky Mackem’, Marty Robertson to put a sublime free kick into the top corner of the net. Leigh Clarke increased the Exiles lead before half-time.

The second half saw Exiles dominating the majority of the play. However, injury to the influential Gareth Davies, hurt in a collision with his own player - the on-rushing goal keeper, proved a set-back and United took advantage to reduce the arrears with 10 minutes remaining.

Exiles were not to be denied though and saw the game out to bag a deserved victory.

Don’t miss that Cup final date!
