Brixington Blues Under-12s were 4-1 winners when they entertained Exmouth United in an Exeter and District Youth League game played at Withycombe Raleigh Common.
After five minutes of even-steven play, the first real chance came when Jack McBryan and Luke Ewing linked well on the left wing and, after a series of good one-twos between the pair, Ewing fired a shot which went through the goalkeeper’s legs and into the net to give Blues the lead.
United gave as good as they got through the first half, but were unable to get the better of a well-organised Blues back line and the interval arrived with just the one goal between the teams.
A few minutes into the second half and Ewing struck again. This time with a long-range effort from the right which the keeper was unable to keep out and Blues led 2-0. Minutes later, Harry Williams made a darting run through the middle, laying the ball off to Ewing, who stroked the ball into the net for his hat-trick.
A few dangerous corners followed, with Ethan Edwards putting great pressure on the United defence. Blues were clearly hunting for a fourth, and, when the ball fell to McBryan, his low shot took a deflection to leave the Exmouth goalkeeper no chance.
United hit back with a slick counter-attack and clinical finish that gave Blues glovesman Ben Jeffery no chance of keeping out.
However, that was as good as it got for United and Blues closed the game out well to deservedly take the points.
This game was a credit to local youth football, played in a wonderful spirit throughout between two teams both looking to play football the right way.
