East Budleigh served up a superb performance to inflict only a second defeat of the season on opponents Exwick Villa, winning by the odd goal in five in what was a thrilling encounter, writes Mark Auton.
The visitors played some good football and were on the front foot from the off; Early clearances from Tim Whiteoak and Matt Jones were important, but the Exeter side went ahead in the 12th minute;
A near post corner caused the damage as the ball was rifled into the roof of Budleigh’s net.
Exwick continued to have the lions share of posession, but Budleigh’s rearguard of Adam and Matt Jones, Dan Reynolds and Darren Dawes were snapping at every tackle, whilst the midfield, anchored by the impressive Whiteoak and supported by Mike White, Aiden Martin and Ben Wyatt kept them at bay.
Just after the half hour Budleigh won a free-kick; Whiteoak delivered well and it was Dan Atkinson that rose to head the equalizer.
Seven minutes later it got even better for Budleigh when fellow striker Jack Howarth swept Budleigh infront following a fine team goal and a great assist from Wyatt.
Exwick began the second period fired up, but just six minutes in Budleigh went further ahead; Martin’s long throw was flicked on by Atkinson, Whiteoak headed against the bar before reacting quickly to rifle in number three.
As in the first half the visiting side had a lot of the play and a number of corners hitting the post from one of them, whilst Dance was at his best on a couple of occasions.
A quarter of an hour from the end the arrears were reduced to just one following a penalty kick for Exwick to set up a tense finale, but Budleigh held out to gain a richly deserved three points.
Man of the Match was hotly contested, but awarded to Reynolds who slotted in at centre half in a role he is not normally accustomed to.
This Saturday East Budleigh Reserves are at home where they entertain Dunkeswell (kick-off 2.15pm)
