A late winner from Aiden Martin gave East Budleigh a festive result to cheer last Saturday at neighbours Lympstone, writes Mark Auton.
Budleigh began well playing down the slope and were the better side early on; Both Jack Howarth and Martin could have scored, but against the run of play it was the hosts that struck first with a shot that seemed to bounce awkwardly in front of keeper Rob Dance.
Budleigh continued to spray the ball around with the midfield working hard; Tim Whiteoak was giving the stability in front of the back four that allowed Mike White and Josh Whiller more freedom to attack.
Ten minutes from the break, but got the reward they deserved when Dan Atkinson converted at the far post having earlier missed another opportunity.
In the second-half both sides went in search of the three points. Budleigh introduced Matt Thomas and Ben Wyatt who both did well for the last twenty minutes and it was Budleigh who grabbed the winner when Martin’s rich vein of from in front of goal continued when his shot ricocheted off an opposing defender and into the net.
In a good all round display Adam Jones was voted Man of the Match for Budleigh following some excellent tackling and defending.
This Saturday Budleigh will hope to start 2015 with a similar outcome when they host Tiverton side Westexe (2.15pm).
