Goals from Jack Howarth and Aiden Martin gave East Budleigh Reserves a 2-1 home success over Dunkeswell Rovers, writes Mark Auton.
In what was a tough encounter Budleigh had to work hard although they should have been ahead before taking the lead five minutes before half-time; Josh Whiller, Mike White and Dan Atkinson all involved as Howarth finished off a good move.
Earlier in the half Martin had looked Budleigh’s most creative going close on a couple of occasions, whilst Howarth was also denied from Steve Davey’s centre.
An early injury to Matt Jones saw him replaced by brother Adam who slotted into the back four alongside, Harry Trick, Dan Reynolds and Max Tooby and all of them knew they had been in a game.
Ten minutes into the second half the away side levelled and but for Jones’ goalline clearance may well have gone ahead.
Midway through the second period Budleigh regained the advantage; Howarth challenged an opposing defender and as the ball ran loose Martin produced an excellent right foot finish.
Budleigh keeper Mark Bown made a fine stop to protect the lead, whilst Martin set up Aaron Wakley whose effort was charged down leaving Budleigh to hang onto the points.
In a good all round team display, Martin shaded the Man of the Match vote.
This Saturday Budleigh visit Newton St Cyres, whilst the First X1 are at Witheridge. Both matches kick-off at 2.15pm.
