Exmouth Town Reserves made the short journey to Woodbury where they bagged a deserved single goal success.

Town had made the short trip to Woodbury knowing that victory would see them leapfrog their hosts to share top spot with Division Five leaders Newtown Thirds.

Town began with a 4/3/3 formation and it certainly paid dividends as they went a goal up inside the first two minutes when Luke Smith scored a simple tap-in after strong approach play from Richard Ralph and Gareth Davies.

Town then looked to press the game with the plan being to get their wingmen into play but it was the Woodbury midfield who seized control with Town forced further and further back towards their own line.

Chances were at a premium at either end, the best falling to Woodbury but Town keeper Robert Gluchowski made a fine save to ensure his side went into the break with the advantage.

Plying up the slope after the break Town reverted to a more solid 4/4/2 with Josh Kirby introduced to the front line with the ever-reliable Achref Ghnami switched from right back to join him in a new-look two man strike force.

The switch made an instant impact and four times in the opening 15 minutes of the second half Town fashioned chances that really ought to have been put away. However, none were and so Woodbury remained very much in the game.

Town’s defence though maintained a firm grip on proceedings and, with the impeccable Tony Pallett together with Steve Cadywould comfortably dealing with the best the hosts had to offer whilst the midfield duo of Tim Caudrelier and Richard Ralph gave a master-class of middle third control enabling Town to see the game to a wining conclusion.

Young James Leaper also had a fine game at right back. To Woodbury’s credit, they gave Town as tough an encounter they have had this term so far and if both teams continue to play in the way they approached this particular contest, then both should be part of the promotion picture come April.

This Saturday the Town Reserves entertain Axmouth United who have also started the season in fine style. Kick off for the Southern Road game is 2.15pm.
