Aaron Denny scored a hat-trick as Budleigh Salterton bagged a 15th win of the South West Peninsula League season with a 5-1 Monday win at Bovey Tracey, writes Alan Beer.

It is the fifth time in seven away league successes this season that the Robins have scored four or more goals and their season’s goal tally now stands at 81 from 28 games and that is 24 more than the next best – the 57 from 24 games scored by the only two sides to sit above them in the table, St Martins and Newton Abbot Spurs.

Denny needed just 10 minutes to make his initial mark on proceedings as a left wing raid ended with a cross into the box where Denny pounced to drill the ball home. The early goal was followed by a period of end-to-end football on a pitch that became increasingly heavier as the rain continued to fall.

Ten minutes before the break George Pannell provided the assist for Jordan Harris to net, and five minutes later Harris struck again.

Just before the break, Denny and Bovey glovesman Grant Fisher both went wholeheartedly into a 50/50 challenge and the Bovey ‘keeper seemed to land awkwardly on his on-kicking leg. Play continued before the referee’s attention was drawn to the fact that the unfortunate Fisher was still on the ground.

After a short delay Fisher was stretchered off and Denny – somewhat bizarrely – and harshly, was booked with a free-kick awarded to the hosts – this despite the fact that play had continued for a spell after the collision! Five minutes into the second half Denny netted his second, applying a polished finish after a slick passing move.

In the 52nd minute, the ground conditions played a big part in Bovey getting a goal back as the ball stopped dead in the thickening mud in the Budleigh penalty area and Joe Bushin tucked it home.

That was to be the final serious threat to the Robins’ goal and Denny topped off a terrific individual contribution when he completed his hat-trick with five minutes remaining.
