East Budleigh Reserves began their new Macron Devon and Exeter League Division Seven season with a 1-0 Vicarage Road win over Culm United Reserves, writes Mark Auton.

Budleigh started on the front foot and created early chances and, from a corner Wayne Gooding delivered the assisting cross for Dave Clow to head home.

Jack Hocking went close to a second as Budleigh had the better of the game, but they had to settle for a single goal lead at half-time.

The visitors rarely threatened the Budleigh defence, but when they did keeper Drew Shorrock handled comfortably.

Second half chances for Joe Walker, Darren Caldwell and Mark Bown were all missed, but Budleigh deserved to hold on.

Man of the Match was Clow, whilst Gavin Russell and Marc Bowles worked hard in Budleigh’s midfield engine room.

This Saturday (September 1) Budleigh are on the road with a trip to Sidmouth (3pm).
