Budleigh Salterton Ladies Football team made a nervous start to life in the Premier Division of the Westward Developments Devon Women League, writes SpursTom.
The Robinettes season began with a visit to Bideford Town ladies on Sunday.
This was a case of the established Robins against the new kids on the block, also known as the Robins, with match official Mr Keith Greenleaf being in charge. The hosts began strongly with attacks down their left hand side and taking the game to Budleigh.
The visitors began counter attacking winning the first corner in the process, but were soon defending a corner themselves. The opening goal arrived in the eighth minute. Annabel Halstead broke down the middle before squeezing the ball pass keeper Katherine Binmore to put Bideford ahead. Though Budleigh went close afterwards an equaliser eluded them in a fairly even fast half.
With five substitutes at their disposal to use compared to the East Devon Robinettes having travelled with only one, the odds would seem to be in the hosts favour on a hot afternoon. The game flowed from end to end, corners and throw-ins were in abundance.
It was from one of these in the 74th minute which got Budleigh back on level terms, the kick was partly cleared to debutant Leah Rawlings who crashed an unstoppable right foot volley into the net to ensure her side got a very creditable draw from their first outing this term.
