Budleigh Salterton endured ‘one of those afternoons’ in front of goal as they slipped to a single goal defeat at home to Galmpton United, writes Alan Beer.

In a first half of end-to-end play, but with precious little goalmouth action, the one real opportunity to break the deadlock came in the 15th minute when Piers McLaughlin set up Jack Greenslade and his shot beat visiting gloves man Simon Primmer, but cannoned back off the frame of the goal.

Early in the second half another excellent ball from McLaughlin put Aaron Denny in, but his shot from 18-yards lacked power.

In the 57th minute the Robins went close again when Mark Lever saw a fierce shot strike the crossbar. The ball stayed out, was swiftly cleared up field, and seconds later was in the back of the home net with Alex Bayliss scoring from close range!

The Budleigh response was good and Denny drew a fine save by Primmer.

Deep into added time the Robins Man of the Match, Karl Riddell saw a header fly fractionally wide of the upright.

The defeat leaves Budleigh just nine points clear off bottom side Exwick Villa who have played three games fewer.

This Saturday the Robins meet Crediton for the third time in four weeks when the pair contest league points at Greenway Lane (3pm).
