Budleigh Salterton went down 2-1 on their South West Peninsula League, Eastern Division visit to Crediton United, and will return to Mid Devon on Saturday looking to reverse the outcome when the sides will contest a Devon Premier Cup quarter-final, writes Alan Beer.

The first half of then match did not produce a goal, but much of that was down to the excellence of home goalkeeper Lee Waring. The gloves man denied Aaron Denny’s cross-cum-shot in the 17th minute and went on to deliver a faultless display.

Four minutes into the second half the Robins made good ground down the right from where George Pannell crossed and the ball was met by Denny who was again denied by Waring.

That save was made all the more important when, two minutes later, with their first genuine shot, the home side took the lead with Kenny Ord firing home from 18-yards.

Just past the hour mark the lead was doubled when Richard Blake scored from close range after Budleigh goalkeeper Alan Doble had made a fine initial save.

Six minutes later Denny was clean through when hauled down by United gloves man Waring who was fortunate not to be carded given it was a ‘last man’ offence!

Jack Greenslade slammed the spot kick home, but rather than set up a grandstand finish the game petered out for the home side to bank the points.

Home goalkeeper Waring was unanimously chosen as the Man of the Match!

The defeat leaves Budleigh sitting fifth bottom after 13 defeats in 23 league outings this season.

The Robins will be hoping for a very different outcome when they return to Mid Devon on Saturday.

The other three quarter-final ties are: Buckland Athletic versus Holsworthy, Exwick Villa v East Allington United and St Martins v Teignmouth.
