Budleigh Salterton denied by late Appledore goal

Budleigh Salterton were held to a 1-1 draw by Appledore but felt they could have taken all three points.

In the last minute of the match substitute Jack Howarth was closing fast on the Appledore red zone when Tom Watson brought him down.

The referee felt it was a clear, goal-scoring chance as he brandished a red card at Watson.

That was scant consolation for the Robins though as the chance was lost.

Appledore had most of the chances in the first half and were glad of a man-of-the-match performance from Alan Doble in goal for keeping it 0-0 at half time.

Ryan Levine went close and Marsh brought a good safe out of Doble too.

When Doble stopped another Marsh effort the rebound went to Jamie Finckleton, whose follow-up attempt was clear off the line by Budleigh’s Ross James.

Budleigh went ahead on 69 minutes when Aaron Denny set up Callum Shipton on the edge of the six-yard box.

Appledore equalised on 81 minutes when Budleigh failed to clear a corner and this time Finckleton fired home.

The Robins have two games to go before the season ends – St Martins away this Saturday and Newton Abbot Spurs at Marsh Road next Wednesday night.
