Budleigh Salterton 2, Exmouth Town 1
Budleigh Salterton managed what no other South West peninsula league, Eastern Division side has done this season, defeat Exmouth Town, writes Alan Beer.
Given the amount of pre-match hype, it became a very good Good Friday for the Greenway Lane faithful who also later learnt that the win had lifted their side into second place in the table.!
The title-chasing visitors started the game the more lively although neither side created a real scoring chance until Peter Grover cut in from the right and had a fierce shot blocked by Liam Jones.
It was the Robins who opened the scoring when the Exmouth defence failed to clear and Grover found the top left hand corner with a shot from 18 yards.
From then onwards the Robins settled, and if anything, looked the most likely to score the next goal, but half time arrived with just the one goal separating the teams.
Three minutes into the second period Ace High missed a chance to level
when he shot wide from the edge of the 18-yard box.
On 68 minutes the home defence failed to deal with a loose ball in the 6-yard area allowing Adam Fowler to head in from close range to level things up.
The visitors made three substitutions to try and clinch a win, but Budleigh remained in control. A break down the right hand side saw Man of the Match Grover make his way into the area where he was hauled down and the referee pointed to the spot!
Grover picked himself up, dusted himself down, and coolly slotted the penalty beyond Jones.
That proved to be the winning goal and Exmouth’s long unbeaten record was in tatters leaving the Budleigh faithful to savour the moment.
Budleigh team: Pullin, Everest, Hancock, Ellis, Pallett, Lever, Schlaefli (Greenslade), Wright, Grover (Turner), Williams, Pannell (Sale).
