Budleigh Salterton booked a Throgmorton Devon Premier Cup semi-final meeting with fellow South West Peninsula League, Eastern Division side St Martins after a 4-1 win at Crediton United, writes Alan Beer.
A fortnight before the Robins had lost 2-1 in a league encounter, but this game saw a very different outcome with Budleigh holding a measure of control for long periods of the contest.
The home side were dealt a blow with a warm-up injury to their goalkeeper which meant a late change and the stand-in stopper, joint-manager Matt Trenaman was beaten in the 10th minute when he could only parry a Reece Stevens shot out to Mark Lever who thumped the ball home. Six minutes later some good approach play by Aaron Denny ended with his cut back finding Jack Greenslade who drilled the ball home. On the half hour Kenny Ord fired the home side back into the contest, but the two-goal margin was swiftly restored with George Pannell the scorer to see the Robins into the break 3-1 to the good.
There was just the one goal in a second half largely dominated by a confident Budleigh. That goal came after Callum Shipton had done well to fine Greenslade who doubled his tally and put the game beyond the hosts.
Greenslade could, indeed should, have had a treble, but a ‘third’ goal of his was chalked off for off-side.
The win means the Robins will take on St Martins at Exmouth Town’s Southern Road ground on Wednesday, March 18. The week before Buckland Athletic Reserves take on Exwick Villa in the other semi-final.
Budleigh and St Martins have already met twice this season. The Robins won the meeting in the League Cup – 1-0 after extra-time, whilst the Exminster side won 3-1 at Greenway Lane in the first of this season’s two league encounters. They are also set to meet in the league again in April.
