Budleigh left feeling robbed of success in North Devon

The Robins made the long trip to North Devon for the second time this and, unlike their previous visit, returned to Greenway Lane with something to show for their efforts, writes Alan Beer.

That said, if they were disappointed with the earlier visit and a Throgmorton Cup defeat, they will have left this time with an amount of angst about a ‘goal’ they felt should, have stood when netted ten minutes from time!

The game started with a scare for the visitors when, in the third minute, a Sam Fishwick

cross from the right hand side went through the Robins six-yard box untouched!

The hosts missed another chance on 11 minutes, this time Luke Evans colliding with a post as he tried to get on the end of another cross. The Robins then missed a chance themselves. A Darren Carr cross reached Mark Lever, but he headed narrowly over the bar. On the half hour mark it was Jack Greenslade going close as he reached a George Pannell cross into the six-yard box, but could only clip it over the bar.

Against the run of play Appledore took the lead when a long through-ball fell for Evans who slotted home from 18-yards.

Budleigh struck back a minute before the break. Hugo Demetre picked up a loose ball and looped a shot over Darren Rose in the home goal to level the scores.

Six minutes into the second period the game was delayed for 20 minutes after an injury to the home side’s Seth Hodorowski who had fallen awkwardly and dislocated a shoulder. From the restart neither side created a chance until the 80-minute mark. When Pannell was fouled 30-yards out and the resulting free-kick was taken by Carr. His delivery was good and it was met by the head of Matt Dawson who directed his header in to the net only for what looked a late flag to be raised and the ‘goal’ chalked off thereby denying the Robins the win that their overall, performance surely deserved.

Budleigh team: Hockhold, Bradshaw, Carr, Everest, Nield, Demetre, Lever, Shipton (Pollard), Dawson, Pannell, Greenslade (Williams). Subs not used; Wright, Hill.

On Saturday the Robins travel to basement dwellers Liverton United who claimed a first win of the season last weekend with victory over Sidmouth Town.
