Budleigh Salterton were beaten 5-2 by visiting University, but this was a game that could easily have had a very different ending, writes Alan Beer.

The Robins made the perfect start with Callum Shipton turning home a George Pannell cross in the very first minute!

It took the students until the half hour mark to draw level and the equaliser had an element of good fortune about it for Budleigh centre half, Carl Everest’s attempted clearance cannoned ff goalkeeper Alex Richardson and into the net!

Just three minutes later a poor clearance gifted the lively Ben Mogg the opportunity to fire the students into the lead and that’s how it stood at the break.

Two goals inside the first eight minutes of the second half effectively ended the game.

In the 49th minute Myles Blenkinsop eased his way off his marker to turn a deep cross into the net at the far post and four minutes later Mogg applied a clinical finish to make it 4-1.

The Robins came back well and player-manager Danny Williams crossed for Piers MacLaughlin to tuck the ball home. Minutes later MacLaughlin had an even better chance to put the hosts within a goal of the visitors, but his close range header sailed over the bar. Nine minutes from time Mogg struck again to complete his hat-trick and consign the Robins to another home reversal.

On Saturday the Robins travel to Crediton United.
