Brixington Blues Under-12s made the short journey into Exeter to play Exeter Panthers in an Exeter and District Youth League, Division Two game, writes Alan Diprose.
On a frosty pitch Blues wanted to extend their recent winning run, but it soon became apparent that Panthers were going to be anything but pushovers!
Panthers had the ball in the net early on, but it was ruled out for offside. Then, after seven minutes, Sam Diprose was a whisker away from opening the scoring when his shot struck the bar.
Blues were having to stand up and be counted and the trio of Matthew Rye, Tom Humphry and Scott Simpson-Currie, did just that!
Captain Luke Buck was forced to retire from the game midway through the first half and, in only his second game for the side, Barna Hudacsek, was asked to deputise at centre back which he did admirably.
The game reached half-time without a goal, but it was certainly a half not short on action!
Within two minutes of the restart Blues found the breakthrough. Will White slid an inch-perfect pass through the Panthers defence and Sam Diprose rifled the ball past the onrushing keeper. Panthers came right back at Blues and Will Cooper was forced into two full-length dives to confirm his Man of the Match status, but he was beaten late on when a well-struck free-kick arrowed its way past home.
Back came Blues and they sealed a deserved victory when Sam Diprose set up Will White to net the winner.
This coming Saturday it’s the big ‘in-house’ derby with Blues taking on United!
