Brixington Blues U8s share derby spoils with Exmouth United

Brixington Blues and Exmouth United met in an Exeter Youth League Under-8 age group derby meeting and, as the 0-0 score line suggests, two well-matched sides fought out a seriously close encounter.
United applied the early pressure, but Laurence Bainbridge made his presence felt, breaking up the attack before releasing Harry Batten, who won a free-kick on the right hand side of the area. Nothing came from the free-kick, but, at the other end of the pitch, United continued to raid, but got little change out of the combined defensive efforts of Frank Shelton and young Bainbridge.
The game ebbed and flowed and, for Blues, the combination of Sonny Rowsell and Josh Lawrence worked well together to get quality ball to the forwards. United went close just before the break, but again the Blues defence was equal to the threat.
There was more of the same in the second half. Liam May made was a handful for the opposition’s defence and Oliver Dawkins came into the outfield in the second half to trouble the opposition with his composed play and trademark long thrown-ins causing problems.
Harry Batten made a number of his now trademark runs and Josh Lawrence kept United’s defence busy.
Late in the contest, Ben Vine made a terrific save with his feet from what looked like a certain goal for the opposition to keep the game at 0-0 and earn a hard-fought draw for the Blues.
Blues: Laurence Bainbridge, Frank Shelton, Sonny Rowsell, Oliver Dawkins, Liam May, Harry Batten, Josh Lawrence, Ben Vine.
