Budleigh Salterton striker Khalid Badavi scored a 15-minute hat-trick as Budleigh Salterton made a stunning start to the new South West Peninsula League, Eastern Division season.
BUDLEIGH striker Khalid Badavi certainly made an early impression in the opening game of the Budleigh Salterton season, writes Alan Beer.
Badavi struck a hat-trick inside fifteen minutes to put the Robins on the way to a big opening day victory, but it was a late goal from last season’s golden boot winner, Danny Williams, that proved to be the difference as visiting side Bickleigh also had a hat-trick star in their ranks to pull it back to 3-3 before the Williams strike.
The game was just four minutes old when Badavi picked up the ball just inside the opposition half and he advanced 30 yards before slotting the ball home.
Ten minutes later it was 2-0 as Badavi collected the ball from a free-kick, looked up, and drove the ball into the corner of the net.
It got better for the Robins for, straight from the Bickleigh kick-off, the ball was won back, slipped through and Badavi showed the last defender a clean set of heels before tucking the ball past the keeper to complete one of the fastest hat-tricks in many moons of opening days!
Budleigh had a lucky escape when a hand-ball in the area was deemed to be one of ball-to-hand, but Bickleigh did reduce the arrears just before the break to go in trailing 3-1.
Eight minutes into the second half ,the visitors were right back into the game when they grabbed a second and the comeback was complete when their centre forward notched his third to level things up at 3-3.
The equaliser seemed to inspire the Robins, who quickly increased the tempo, found a new gear, and went in search of a fourth goal.
It duly arrived with ten minutes remaining when an Adam Clarke free-kick was headed against the upright by Sam Schlaefli.
There, right on cue, was last season’s leading scorer Danny Williams and he opened his account for the new term by smashing the ball home to seal a 4-3 victory.
