A total of eight Exmouth Swimmers travelled to the Exe Valley Leisure Centre for the ninth annual Tiverton Sparkler Meet, and came away with 10 medals and 14 personal bests, writes Marcus Allen.
In the first event of the day, Jasmine Simpson-Currie won gold in the girls 14 years 200m fly, and was soon followed by Finlay Roberts with bronze in the boys 9 years 50 metre breaststroke in a personal best time of 50.83 seconds.
Roberts also achieved personal bests in the 50 fly and 50 freestyle. Joseph Bollington ensured that there was a successful conclusion to session one for Exmouth, by taking gold in the 200 metre freestyle with a personal best time of 2:30.72. It was certainly a successful meet for Bollington for he finished the day with four medals in total. In addition to his gold in the 200 metre freestyle, he also recorded first place in the breaststroke over the same distance. A silver and a bronze followed in the 200 backstroke and 200IM respectively, all of which were personal bests.
Session two also saw Sophie Spiller take silver in the 50 metre freestyle with a personal best of 30.90 seconds, and followed it up with a bronze medal in the final session. Both Jessica Dixon and Clara Woodhead competed in the Girls 13 year age group, with Clara collecting personal best times in the 200IM and 200 breaststroke.
There was further joy to come in the Girls 100 fly, which was towards the end of the final session and it was worth the wait for two swimmers who had been there for the entire day.
Abbie Freeman won a silver medal in the 11 year age group with a personal best of 1:36.54. Next up was Jasmine Simpson-Currie, who having won Exmouth’s first medal of the day, secured silver in the 14 years age group with a time of 1:23.77.
The times for both girls were also County qualifying times for next year’s Devon championships.
