A small group of experienced and new fine-boat rowers, punching above their weight on more than one occasion for Exmouth Rowing Club, finished the 2011 summers racing on a high with pots and medals galore.
Among the highlights of the season was the outstanding men’s novice double scull pairing of Charlie Angell and Chris Long who out classed their other competitors to an unbeaten seasons racing.
The ladies novice fours squad of Kim Tapper, Sophie Douglas, Sophie Medlock, Fiona Pink, Olivia Barnard and Allie Giles raced well throughout the season in various new combinations to gain two wins narrowly missing out on the all-important third win to gain the West of England Championship.
Although missing out on the championship Allie Giles gained her third win at novice to gain Senior C rowing status after a long fought battle in the novice category.
Mixed Novice Squad of Charlie Angell, Jack Davey, Sophie Douglas, Sophie Medlock, Laurence O’Dea and Ian Ladbrook took wins throughout the season gaining in confidence and experience with each race.
Kim Tapper raced with various doubles partners throughout the season with both Exmouth other west of England Club rowers to gain a mixed bag of results including the first win of the season at Wimbleball Lake with Olivia Barnard.
The Single scull rowers of Charlie Angell, Chris Long, Kim Tapper and Jack Davey raced in their specific categories in many tight hard fought races gaining many seconds and thirds between them and the sole win to Chris Long in testing conditions at Torquay regatta.
Club Captain Brian O’Dea (and cox for the majority of the season’s fours crews) is delighted with the results from such a small group of rowers from the club.
While several experienced members of the squad are moving on it leaves space for some new blood to come through the ranks for next summer’s regattas.
