OVER the past weekend, four Exmouth boats competed against 1700 other craft in the Round the Island Race (Isle of Wight) the premier event of the sailing calendar, writes Rachel Hughes.

This race takes the huge fleet anti-clockwise round the Isle of Wight, a distance of 70 or more miles, and requires skilled anticipation of wind, tide and the immense press of other vessels all trying their best to gain advantage.

Our Olympic sailor Ben Rhodes performed superbly finishing 10th overall in his 20ft boat Lisette and competing against boats up to six times that size, while his father Chris, sailing the larger Peanut, scored 46th overall.
