After a testing period on the health and injury front Exmouth Harrier Ellie Sutcliffe opted for an off-roader, the Cockington Caper as her comeback race, writes Dave Eveleigh.

This is a tough, hilly and very muddy seven and a quarter mile race around fields, footpaths and woodland tracks near Torquay.

Ellie’s tactics were to set off hard and hope to hang on in front of the inevitable challenge from the more conservative runners. This almost paid off as she led the women’s race until mile seven and the very last climb on the course.

At this point Torbay AC athlete, Wendy Urban, was closing in fast and she caught a breathless Ellie with less than 200 yards to go! Ellie’s time was 59.01, giving her 14th place overall out of 171 finishers and she beat the SWRR athlete, Lucy Commander, for the first time.
