At the Ironbridge Runner 3K Series on the Exeter Arena track on Monday Cathy Newman was very pleased with her time of 10:42 in the B Race, writes Dave Eveleigh.
Running an even pace she looked to have the race won but these races are mixed in gender and age and as a 50plus veteran she could be forgiven for having no response to the finishing sprint of the 15-year-old schoolboy that pushed her back to second.
Cathy will be running for England in the British Isles Veterans Cross Country International in Nottingham this weekend.
In the same race Richard Bishop was probably still feeling the effects of the Drogo 10 the day before as he continues a strenuous racing programme. He came home in 15th place and 11:34. In the first race of the evening (‘E’ grade of five) 77-year-old John Perratt ran 14:15 for seventh place of fifteen and John does run – no ‘jogger’ is he!
In the D race Dave Eveleigh took it steady and was second in 12:59, though under the impression he was first after a storming start from the eventual young race winner had taken her out of sight. Exmouth did get a win, in the D Race when 50plus veteran Andrew Johnson ran 12:00 in holding off 55plus female veteran, Karen Cook, quite a scalp since Karen is currently at the top of the world 10K rankings for her 55-59 age group.
