European junior badminton champion Alex Lane, has been selected for the 2013 Under 19 Youth Olympics in Australia.
The reigning triple national champion at Under-17 level who is just back from the World U19 junior championships in Japan where he reached the last 32 in the singles, will be part of a six-strong Great Britain team for the Olympic event in Sydney in January 13-22.
Lane acknowledged he was ‘excited’ about this one-in-a-lifetime opportunity and said how ‘thrilling’ it had been to test his skills against the best in world in Tokyo recently.
The Exmouth Community College A-level youngster is planning to play the senior Opens’ in Scotland, Ireland and Wales as he attempts to win a senior world ranking and his preparations have been boosted by an invitation from Badminton England to train for two weeks with the senior international squads.
Still a year young and eligible to compete at the 2013 World U17 event again, if selected, is one of the fittest players in his age group.
His mother, Suzanne Lane, a coach at the Cranford Visions Academy, is delighted for her son as the 28-times capped former senior international missed out on the main Olympics during her own glittering career.
She said: “It’s a fabulous opportunity and it’s amazing really as my sister Jo was playing in junior tennis in Japan and Australia about the same age as Alex is now.”
There may well be a family trip in the future to the other side of the world for Ben Lane, the reigning England U15 badminton champion, is determined to make the England team for the 2013 World championships in Thailand.
That would mean a lot of travelling in support of both sons for Suzanne and her husband Patrick, if the boys both make the team for Thailand.
Suzanne also makes a point of how appreciative she and Patrick are to recent financial assistance from Exmouth Town Council and Honiton Carpets.
