Bath Buccs 2, Exe 1

This match was always going to be well contested given that the two sides had met the previous campaign when both were battling relegation.

Bath began the brighter, taking advantage of what was a strangely sluggish Exe start. A feature of the home approach was some strong talking and swift switching.

Bath took the early lead with a scramble in front of goal and Exe not clearing their lines.

For the rest of the first half Bath pressed high up the pitch, but got no further change out of the impressive Exe duo of Helen Bray and Kirsty Crocker.

It was not all one-way though and Exe began to find a way into the contest through the determination of Louise Cossey and Laura Allen.

On several occasions Exe went close to leveling with Rebecca Fagg who was twice denied by the excellent Bath keeper.

It was Exe who made the brighter start to the second period, keeping good possession with Ali Kerridge and Clare Whitworth both looking to push the team forward at every opportunity.

The equaliser arrived from a short corner when, aided by the new rule, a straight strike from skipper Kirsty Crocker deflected off a defenders stick into the net.

The remainder of the game was played at a very high tempo with some excellent hockey for both sides. It was in the closing minutes that Bath scored a winner courtesy of a deflection.
