This weekend (27/28 June) Exe Sailing Club is hosting the ninth running of the River Exe Regatta, on behalf of the combined sailing clubs of the River Exe. Writes Mike Rice. The cruiser fleet will be racing to Torquay on Saturday and back again to the Exe on Sunday. For the faster dinghies in class 1 and 2 and the multihulls the weather forecast looks set for racing out to sea in Lyme Bay, while the slower dinghies in class 3 will race in the river between Lympstone and Starcross. This year the Exmouth Windsurfing festival, based on the Recreation Ground and sailing in the waters of the "duck pond" is an integral part of the River Exe Regatta. There will be racing for windsurfers as well as the usual kit demonstrations. Event organiser Pete Manfield of Waterfront Sports is expecting another good turnout of board sailors at all levels, from beginners to experts. There will be a big prize fishing contest on Saturday, starting at 7.00am, organised by the Exmouth Deep Sea Fishing Club and Starcross Fishing and Cruising Club. The weigh-in will take place on the dockside between 5 and 6 pm to decide who has won the £250 first prize and the many other excellent prizes donated by local businesses. The first day will be rounded off with a party at Exe Sailing Club featuring the band "Wired" and a raffle of rail tickets kindly donated by First Great Western. First prize is a pair of first class returns from Exmouth to Paddington. On Sunday the cruisers will race back from Torquay and there will be more racing at sea and in the river for the dinghies. At 4pm there will be the traditional regatta tea and prize giving at Exe Sailing Club, including the famous prize draw for items of sailing clothing and equipment donated by regatta sponsor Sailsport. The regatta is also sponsored by Pennys Estate Agents and, new this year, All Gadgets Marine of Upper Church Street, Exmouth. With a fine, warm weekend forecast we are looking forward to some sea breezes and fun sailing.
