The Woodland Relays is a particularly local event organised and attended only by half-a-dozen local running clubs, including those from Exmouth, Sidmouth and Axe Valley, writes Dave Eveleigh.

It is off-road to make it safe for younger athletes and was initiated about 10 years ago to foster good relations between the clubs. This year’s was organised on Woodbury Common by Exmouth Harrier’s Mike Musgrove and he was also able to use it to raise some money for the Whizz Kidz charity he supports.

There were just three legs of about two-and-a-half miles on a testing, but thankfully dry course last week.

Around forty teams contested the senior event. Axe Valley Runners, with Gary Perratt, Tim Lenton and Liam Roberts were comfortable winners in a total time of 45:32.
