Playing winter golf requires even more stoicism than usual and this was certainly true for the 96 players who contested the February stableford competition at East Devon Golf Club on Saturday, writes Michael Hayes.
The good news was, no temporary greens, nor a trolley ban and the sun was shining out of a clear blue sky. The bad news was, a bitter wind blowing half a gale and greens that seemed as fast as in summer. Good scoring was very difficult and although conditions moderated a little during the day, nobody beat par and the eventual competition standard scratch score was 73. In fact, after the first half of the field had returned their cards, the computer was predicting ‘ handicap reductions only’.
The outstanding rounds of the day were from R Eltham and past county captain Paul Newcombe, each scoring 36 points, with Eltham winning Division One on countback. Third place, also on countback was Alan Forte with 35 points. The winner of Division Two was Neil Sear, also on countback from Alex Hall, both having scored 33 points. Countback was also needed in Division Three where Ron Jefford beat Keith Luff, both carding 33 points. Alex Bannon took third spot scoring 32 points, yet again on countback.
There was a ‘pot’ of £184 to be shared amongst the thirteen players, who managed to score a gross two.
