The women of East Devon Golf Club are hoping that the rain in Spain will be well away from Montecastillo Golf Resort next week, as they head there for the delayed 2021 Annodata UK Golf Club Classic finals (9th & 10th March).

Starting in spring last year, a team of five players have played seven rounds of singles match-play. During the campaign, the Club has been represented by Helen Chivers, Jenny Dobel, Jo Goldsworthy, Sue Harrison, Nina Hawkins, Sarah Jones, Sue Loynes, Deirdre Mackness, Ali Miller, Judy Murray and Sally Underwood and captained by Sue Burley.

Team Captain Sue Burley said: “The team’s achievement in the Annodata UK Club Classic is incredible. We’ve reached the final four out of over 500 entries and I’m very proud of the whole squad.

“The support of everyone at East Devon Golf Club and our friends around Devon has been fantastic. A particular thank you our main sponsors, Fiona Bolt and Cameron Jones Financial Management, and Gary Dobel of GD Construction Solutions, whose names we will wear proudly on our shirts in Spain.

“We are already winners by reaching the finals, and we hope our efforts in Spain will be rewarded with silverware. Spain here we come. Olé, Olé, Olé!”

The teams’ journey to the finals started in spring last year when they won 4-1 in an away match at local rivals Woodbury Park Golf & Country Club. Axe Cliff Golf Club were beaten by the same, followed by a 5-0 defeat of Saunton Golf Club.

Luck of the draw stayed with East Devon as the next two matches were also on home territory and they were too strong for Cornish clubs China Fleet and St Mellion.

It was another whitewash in the penultimate round, thrashing Romsey Golf Club from Hampshire but it went down to the 17th green in the deciding match at Weybrook Park Golf Club, Basingstoke before the East Devon Ladies secured their Spanish adventure.

East Devon will be joined in the 2021 Annodata UK Golf Club Classic finals by Charnwood Forest Golf Club (Leicestershire), Leigh Golf Club (Cheshire) and Nizels Golf Club (Kent).
