East Devon Seniors hosted the third running of the Pheasant Challenge, writes Martin Wisdom.

This annual event involves a challenge from an East Devon team to 11 other clubs we play in senior matches from the area from Thurlestone in south Devon to Saunton in the north and all points in-between.

The event is run as a team event with two teams of three from each club playing a Stableford format with two scores to count on each hole. And the winner is the team with the highest aggregate score of the two teams.

The weather behaved itself in the main, the East Devon course was in its usual excellent condition though the greens were a challenge after the essential annual maintenance.

For the first time the East Devon team won the Challenge with 162 points, but only on countback (scores from back nine holes from both pairs) from previous two-time winners Woodbury GC, with Taunton and Pickeridge GC in third place - one point behind.

The successful East Devon team comprised George Rogers, Phil Keen, Mike Brailey, Derek Fisk, Chris Bird and Alan Foort.
