East Devon celebrated the match of the decade pitching the Ryder Cup team against the ladies’ Solheim Cup team, writes Paul Willoughby.

Well, in your dreams maybe; that would be some coup if the club could get those two teams together.

However last Sunday the team captains, Stephen Phillips (club captain) and Shirley Pressey (ladies captain) put together the best they could with us lot to fight for the newly acquired Rydheim Challenge Vase.

The same format was adopted as used in the Ryder Cup with six singles starting the day followed by three foursomes and three fourballs so 36 players squelched their way round a thoroughly soggy East Devon course to vie for the trophy.

We were lucky to play at all; the course was closed earlier in the day after torrential rain during the night – well, no change there then!

Notwithstanding the previous night’s deluge, the weather was fine enough to start with though we did have a hole’s worth of rain midway through the competition.

The result was a win for the Ryder Cup team by eight and a half to the Solheim ladies’ three and a half.

The ladies will be looking forward to wresting the Rydheim Vase from the men next year.
