East Devon Golf Club’s Harry Nodwell is off to the USA later this month, writes Paul Willoughby.
Harry has been a familiar face to golf club members both in the clubhouse, behind the bar or serving tea and cakes, and on the course where he has represented the Club in many events including The Parker Trophy, The Palairet Cup, the Picture match and a few more. He has been a member of the club for 11 years I remember when his golf bag was bigger than he was – not any more.
Now Exmouth born Harry is off to Averett University in Virginia where he has been awarded a four year scholarship to study sports management and play both soccer and golf for the university. Being so good at golf I was surprised to learn that his first love is football, but he is sufficiently talented that he can turn his hand to most sports. However, he is quite realistic about his prospects of success as a tour golfer and thinks the chances of competing against Tiger Woods are slim, so his target will be down the route of teaching both golf and soccer. That’s really good for the rubbish golfers – he can teach us how to play soccer, or maybe not!
His friend, and also East Devon Golf Club member, Matt Latham, is at University in North Carolina so the two of them will be within easy reach of each other.
After his university course Harry hopes to join the MLS (Major League Soccer, to which David Beckham belonged – you’ll remember him!). You can follow Harry’s progress at Averett University on www.averettcougars.com. We all wish him well and look forward to seeing him when he is back in the UK during his university vacations.
