The first round of the Exe league was played at East Devon on Sunday, writes Paul Willoughby.

The competition was started in 2012 when four local Devon golf clubs (East Devon, Tiverton, Exeter and Woodbury) decided to challenge each other for an annual championship cup.

Each club provides 12 players and the format is thee foursomes and three four-ball better ball teams. For those non golfers reading this article, don’t bother to ask what that means – just let your brain go into neutral and skip to the next paragraph!

There are four matches in the year and, on Sunday, East Devon played Tiverton – and lost.

Never mind; as East Devon Captain Dennis Chivers reminds me, we lost to Tiverton last year, but still won the cup!

Well done Tiverton; they produced a low handicap team who had the ability to beat us on our home course.
